Turtle Hatchery Galle
Turtle Hatchery Galle
The Sea Turtle Farm Galle Mahamodara is a family-run conservation and rehabilitation center located just a few minutes' drive from the historic Galle Fort. Dedicated to protecting endangered marine life, it serves as both a hospital for injured turtles and a safe haven for hatchlings.
Conservation Efforts
Hatchery Program: Eggs are collected from the beach to protect them from predators and human interference. They are re-buried in safe sand plots until they hatch. Species Protection: The center houses five of the world's seven sea turtle species: Green, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and the rare Leatherback. Rehabilitation: A major focus is nursing turtles back to health from injuries caused by fishing nets, boat propellers, or plastic ingestion.
Visitor Experience
Educational Tours: Visitors receive guided briefings on the turtle life cycle and the environmental threats they face. Unique Residents: You may see permanent residents like "Monica" (a 10kg turtle) or albino turtles that cannot survive in the wild. Sunset Release: For an additional fee, visitors may have the opportunity to participate in releasing baby hatchlings into the ocean during the evening.
